Why the amount is written out

Because a figure can be altered after signing and words cannot. That is why banks and contracts ask for the amount twice — in figures and in words — and close the sentence with «فقط لا غير» so nothing can be appended. Where the two disagree, the written form governs.

The agreement rules this follows

Reversal from 3 to 10

Three through ten take the opposite gender from the noun they count: ثلاثة رجال for a masculine noun, ثلاث نساء for a feminine one. This is the rule most tools get wrong.

Agreement for 1, 2, 11 and 12

ريال واحد, أحد عشر / إحدى عشرة — here the number agrees rather than reverses.

The tamyīz follows the last component

In a compound number the final element governs, not the magnitude: مائة ألف but مائتان وأربعة وثلاثون ألفًا.

The currency carries its gender

ريال is masculine, ليرة feminine, هللة feminine — hence خمس وسبعون هللة and not خمسة وسبعون.

Common questions

What does tafqit mean?

Writing a number in words rather than figures, usually closed with «فقط لا غير» so nothing can be added to the amount afterwards. The word comes from the root فقط, which marks restriction.

Are minor units handled?

Yes. The Saudi riyal is a hundred halalas, but the Kuwaiti, Bahraini, Omani, Jordanian, Tunisian and Libyan dinars are a thousand fils or millimes — so 1.5 KWD is five hundred fils, not fifty.

مائة or مئة?

Both are correct. مائة is usual in Gulf official documents, مئة in modern writing. You can switch between them.

Is the amount sent to a server?

No. The whole conversion runs in your browser. That is deliberate: the numbers people convert here are contract values and salaries.
