A 404 Media investigation revealed that AI labs are using middleman services like ISBNdb to anonymously bulk-buy up to a million printed books at a time, cut off their spines for high-speed scanning, and destroy the originals. Pre-2022 books command a premium because they are structurally guaranteed to be free of AI-generated text.
