Apple has unveiled the MacBook Neo, its most affordable laptop ever at $599, marking the company's first dedicated budget Mac in over a decade. Available in four colors and powered by the A18 Pro chip with built-in Apple Intelligence, the device goes on sale March 11 in 30 countries and regions.

Key Highlights

  • $599 starting price ($499 for education) — the cheapest Mac laptop ever
  • A18 Pro chip with 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine
  • Apple Intelligence built in — Writing Tools, Live Translation, Clean Up in Photos, and on-device AI processing
  • Up to 16 hours of battery life in a fanless, silent design
  • Four colors: Blush, Indigo, Silver, and Citrus

Specs and Design

The MacBook Neo features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display at 2408×1506 resolution with 500 nits brightness and support for 1 billion colors. It weighs just 2.7 pounds in a durable aluminum enclosure with a color-matched Magic Keyboard and expanded Multi-Touch trackpad.

Connectivity includes two USB-C ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 6. The laptop ships with 8GB of unified memory and 256GB SSD storage in its base configuration.

AI at the Core

Unlike traditional budget laptops, the MacBook Neo leans heavily on AI capabilities. Apple claims the device handles on-device AI workloads up to 3x faster than competing Intel Core Ultra 5-based laptops. The 16-core Neural Engine powers Apple Intelligence features including text summarization, writing assistance, Live Translation, and the Clean Up tool in Photos — all processed on-device to preserve user privacy.

Who It's For

Apple is positioning the MacBook Neo squarely against Chromebooks and entry-level Windows laptops. John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, said the device was "built from the ground up to be more affordable for more people."

The target audience includes students, families, small business owners, and first-time Mac buyers — a segment Apple has largely ceded to competitors for years.

Impact

The MacBook Neo represents a strategic shift for Apple, which has historically avoided the sub-$700 laptop market. By combining its custom silicon with Apple Intelligence at this price point, the company is betting that AI-capable hardware will become a baseline expectation for even budget devices. Pre-orders are open now, with general availability on March 11, 2026.
