Amazon just made its biggest European bet yet. At MWC 2026 in Barcelona, the company announced an additional €18 billion investment in Spain, bringing its total commitment to €33.7 billion ($39.8 billion) through 2035 — positioning Spain as the AI epicenter of Amazon's European operations.

What's Being Built

The investment centers on the Aragón region, where AWS already operates its Europe (Spain) cloud region. Amazon is expanding across three provinces:

  • Teruel — Amazon becomes the first tech company to announce data center construction in the province
  • Huesca — new data center facilities
  • Zaragoza — additional capacity expansion

AWS will deploy facilities in clusters of three or more, each with separate power and networking systems to minimize failure impact. Some capacity will specifically support AI workloads.

AI Server Manufacturing on Spanish Soil

Beyond data centers, Amazon is building three new supply chain facilities in Aragón:

  • A server manufacturing and assembly plant
  • A logistics and fulfillment warehouse
  • An AI/ML server manufacturing and repair facility

These facilities alone are expected to create approximately 1,800 jobs. The AI server facility will work with AWS's custom Trainium3 accelerators, which offer four times greater energy efficiency than previous models. The Trn3 UltraServer can host 144 chips with NeuronSwitch-v1 networking for direct chip-to-chip communication.

Economic Impact

The numbers are staggering:

  • €31.7 billion estimated contribution to Spain's GDP through 2035
  • 29,900 full-time equivalent jobs supported annually across local businesses
  • 6,700 direct Amazon positions in data center operations and supplier work
  • €30 million in community investment programs

David Zapolsky, Amazon's Senior Vice President, Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer, stated:

"With this investment, we make Spain the AI epicentre of our operations in Europe. This investment will create meaningful opportunities for Spanish citizens, including high-skilled jobs and community initiatives."

Sustainability Commitments

Amazon has matched 100% renewable energy for its Aragón operations since 2022 through 100 solar and wind projects. The new investment includes €17.2 million allocated to five water stewardship initiatives — addressing one of the most contentious issues around data center expansion in southern Europe.

Part of a Global Push

This is Amazon's second massive international investment in recent months, following a $35 billion commitment to India through 2030. The scale reflects the intensifying race among hyperscalers to secure data center capacity as AI workloads surge globally.

For context, combined capital expenditure by Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta is expected to exceed $630 billion in 2026 alone — the vast majority directed toward AI infrastructure.

Why It Matters

Spain's emergence as a major AI infrastructure hub challenges the traditional dominance of Northern European data center markets like Ireland, the Netherlands, and the Nordics. Aragón's advantages — available land, renewable energy potential, and cooler inland climate — make it an increasingly attractive location for hyperscale operations.

For European businesses and developers, this means lower-latency access to AI computing resources and a growing ecosystem of AI-related manufacturing and services in southern Europe.
